Project Group 09: Northeastern Intramurals Participation, DS 4200 S22

Erika Ackley, Jack Hughes, Justin Chen

Service-Learning Course Project as part of DS 4200 S22 Information Presentation & Visualization, taught by Prof. Cody Dunne, Data Visualization @ Khoury, Northeastern University.

Abstract

Whether they are a former high school varsity athlete or have never played organized sports before, taking part in Intramural sports while at college provides students with an environment that promotes health and wellness, allows for competition amongst peers, and ensures fun experiences with members of the Northeastern community. With both team and individual sports like flag football, softball, soccer, broomball, badminton, dodgeball, and volleyball, there really is something for everybody.

Our aim is to assist Northeastern Campus Recreation and the Intramural Sports Program with gaining an understanding of the levels of participation across various sports and leagues offered each semester. While the program has always been popular among students, a closer look at the types of students participating and the sports they prefer to play has yet to be taken. Providing the Intramural Sports Program with insights into participation trends will help them understand where participation is concentrated in order to improve their operations and offerings given the limited resources available to the program.

Northeastern Intramural Participations for Sports by Facility

Percentage of Participation by Year

Visualization explanation

Presentation Slides

Our visualization is composed of a an interactive grouped bar chart with a linked pie chart, as well as a static line chart. All of these charts will come together in order to provide a comprehensive overview of participation by students in Intramural sports here at Northeastern.

The grouped bar chart and linked pie chart work together to visualize most of the information and data. Intramural sports are operated at several facilties across campus and using our grouped bar chart, each facility can be selected to see what participation at that facility has been like from the years 2016-2022.

When a facility is selected, the grouped bar chart updates with the sports that are played at that specific facility. Then, for each sport, a group of colored bars show the number of participations for each year. By hovering over each bar, information is shown regarding the year, sport, and number of participations. To the left you will notice our pie chart that shows the gender distribution for a sport and year when mousing over the corresponding bar on the grouped bar chart. If you remove the mouse from a bar, it shows the total gender distribution in participation for all sports played at the selected facility.

Below these two charts you will find a line chart. This line chart introduces a new perspective of participation in comparison to the entire student population. For each semester since 2016, the percentage of Intramural participations according to all Northeastern students is shown. The additional lines also show the same percentage but for each gender. This is a stand alone chart as we believe linking it together with the facility participations would have created too much complexity for the viewer.
